3T40 Transmission Features & Benefits
OVERVIEW
The Hydra-matic 3T40 is a hydraulically actuated 3-speed transaxle. Wide-ratio gearing provides a combination of vehicle performance and fuel economy that is still used 20 years after its introduction.
The 3T40 is mated to GM's 2.2-liter LN2 engine and is available in limited quantities on the Sunfire.
NEW OR CHANGED FOR 2001 MODEL YEAR
2001 is a carry-over model year for the 3T40.
HISTORY
The 3T40 first saw duty in the X-Cars of the early 1980s, and continual enhancements over the years have allowed it to demonstrate phenomenal longevity.
SMOOTH OPERATION
Highly refined hydraulic controls provide for smooth shifting. The torque converter clutch is used to enhance fuel economy. Its actuation is so quiet and smooth that most drivers are not aware of the clutch's operation.
OTHER FEATURES
Efficiency of the 3T40 is maximized through the use of a variable-capacity hydraulic pump that continually matches pump output to performance requirements, such as strong acceleration or top-gear, fuel-efficient cruising.
The design of the input gear set allows for efficient lubricant flow, resulting in smoother operation and increased durability. The final drive pinion gears on the 3T40 are double-honed for improved surface finish. This allows for a more precise interface with the needle bearings, leading to improved durability.
LOW MAINTENANCE
The 3T40 uses GM's long-life DEXRON-III transmission fluid, which does not require fluid or filter change, (except for certain driving conditions as outlined in the Owner's Manual.)
