2001 Pontiac Grand Am: Sporty, Reliable and Durable

DETROIT – Grand Am is known for delivering reliability and durability without sacrificing sporty, exciting styling or a spirited driving experience. For 2001, Grand Am simplifies its lineup and adds extra excitement to make the ride even more enjoyable.

"The 2001 Grand Am represents a further step in our never-ending quest for increased quality," said Grand Am Brand Manager Sam Mancuso. "For 2001, we've reduced the total build combinations to enable increased efficiencies in production and quality. We've determined the most popular configurations, and we're simplifying the line-up based on this information. Grand Am is one of the first high-volume vehicles to use market-based configurations. The end result is an even more customer-pleasing line of vehicles."

Model Lineup
With the elimination of the SE2 model, Grand Am's simplified 2001 model lineup gives Grand Am customers a choice from among four models equipped with the most popular features just right for them.

The standard SE coupe and sedan feature the Twin Cam engine, a sporty five-speed transmission, air-conditioning, 15-inch (381 mm) wheels and tires, and a Delco AM/FM sound system with auto-reverse cassette.

The Grand Am SE1 adds cruise control, power windows, power sport mirrors, power height adjustment for the driver's seat, a split-folding rear seat, and five-spoke cast-aluminum wheels.

GT models take everything that's standard on SE1 and wrap it in their own distinctive exterior accents: unique front and rear fascias, color-keyed side cladding, twin-post mirrors, decklid spoiler, and taillamps. Goodyear RSA P225/50R16 tires are mounted on 16-inch (406 mm) five-spoke cast aluminum GT-specific wheels. Other standard performance features are four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS, variable-effort power steering, and an upgraded suspension system consisting of firmer bushings, solid front and rear anti-roll bars and specific spring rates. Leather seating surfaces are available in all GT editions.

The Grand Am GT1 contributes automatic transmission, an enhanced traction system, remote keyless entry, 16-inch (406 mm) aluminum wheels, and redundant steering-wheel controls to the mix. GT1 also features a six-way power driver's seat, and a power sunroof.

New Audio Systems
Customer-pleasing excitement for 2001 Grand Am buyers comes in the form of newly upgraded Delco sound systems for all models. An AM/FM stereo with a seek feature and auto-reverse cassette is standard on Grand Am SE. The standard system on SE1 and GT (available on SE) replaces the cassette with a CD player and adds a seven-band equalizer and digital clock. Standard on GT1 and available on SE1 and GT is an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player, equalizer and clock.

Monsoon Audio System
A Monsoon® premium audio system has been added for 2001. Standard on GT and GT1 and available on SE1, Monsoon's eight optimally placed speakers deliver musical excitement worthy of the Pontiac brand. Monsoon is an innovative, high-performance audio system perfect for those who want deep, rich sound and dramatic clarity.

This Monsoon system has been tailored specifically to the Grand Am's acoustical environment. Monsoon delivers musical excitement through eight speakers placed optimally to maximize sound performance. The active crossovers direct low, midrange and high frequencies to the appropriate speakers. Each coax speaker includes a tweeter backed by a subwoofer, yielding clear highs and powerful bass response.

Child Safety-Seat Anchors
Safety for the youngest Grand Am passengers is addressed for 2001 with lower child safety-seat anchors. Located between the seat back and seat cushion, these anchors provide a snugger, tighter seat attachment for a more secure ride.

Other Changes
Other changes to Grand Am include new Wave/Form Cloth interior trim, a new 15-inch (381 mm) aluminum wheel design, and three new exterior colors: Galaxy Silver Metallic, Champagne Beige Metallic and Dark Bronzemist Metallic.

Long List of Standard Features
Grand Am's standard equipment list provides features that some competitors simply don't offer. On all Grand Ams, you'll find five-mph bumpers, ABS, air-conditioning, tilt steering wheel, programmable door locks with lockout protection, battery rundown protection, an electric remote trunk release, an oil life sensor, the PASSLock II theft-deterrent, a sealed-for-life transmission, and illuminated entry with theater dimming.

Customer-pleasing Packages
For SE1 models, the "Solid Value" Package contains 16-inch (406 mm) aluminum wheels and tires, a Monsoon eight-speaker sound system with AM/FM stereo, cassette player, and CD, and a power sunroof. The GT models' "Solid Value" Package is similar, upgrading the aluminum wheels to 16-inch (406 mm) ChromeTech wheels.

Customers opting for the GT1 "Solid Value" Package receive leather seating surfaces and 16-inch (406 mm) ChromeTech wheels.

Classic Pontiac Exterior
Grand Am's exterior is replete with instantly recognizable Pontiac design cues: cat's-eye headlamps, twin-port grille, round driving lamps, and aggressively ribbed lower body contours. At the rear, bold exhaust outlets, integrated taillamp housings and matching round lamps carry on the Pontiac legacy.

GT models sport distinctive front and rear fascias, color-keyed bodyside cladding, twin-post body color sport mirrors, wheel treatments, and a standard rear deck spoiler.

Grand Am Performance
Grand Am's 2.4-liter Twin Cam 16-valve engine delivers an impressive 150 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 155 lb.-ft. (210 Nm) of torque at 4400 rpm.

Electrical terminals on the Twin Cam's throttle body are gold plated for enhanced reliability. The engine's 16-valve combustion-chamber and other advanced features allow compliance with California and Northeast state low-emissions vehicle (LEV) requirements.

The 3400 V6 engine that's optional in SE editions delivers 170 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 195 lfb.-ft. (264 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm to set the pace in the compact class. Grand Am GTs up the ante with a standard Ram Air version of the same engine equipped with cold-air induction and lower-restriction exhaust. These enhancements boost output to 175 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 205 lb-ft. (278 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm.

Grand Am's 4T45-E automatic transaxle, standard with the 3400 V6, is engineered for operation with an Enhanced Traction System that automatically limits front wheel spin in slippery conditions.

Manufactured by the renowned transmission specialist Getrag, the five-speed transmission, that's standard on Grand Am SE models, is loaded with special features. A composite shifter base helps isolate powertrain noise and vibration from the Grand Am's interior. All gears are ground and honed for smooth, quiet operation. Closely spaced ratios help the engine to provide brisk, quick acceleration, while an overdrive fifth gear delivers quiet and efficient highway cruising.

World-Class Structure
Underlying all that Grand Am has to offer, there's a world-class body structure designed by means of advanced computer-aided techniques to optimize stiffness while minimizing weight. The Grand Am's 25 Hz body rigidity sets a standard for the compact class. It's on par with world-class luxury vehicles from Mercedes, BMW and Cadillac.

A four-wheel independent suspension builds on this foundation. Aluminum suspension knuckles reduce unsprung weight for responsive ride and handling. Torque-axis powertrain mounting uses two mounts to support the mass of the engine and transaxle and two others specifically tuned to resist torque and damp idle vibrations. Mounting Grand Am's power rack-and-pinion steering system directly to the hydroformed chassis cradle provides precise on-center feel with excellent isolation of road disturbances.

Driver-Focused Interior
Grand Am's interior design focuses on the driver through features like large, circular instruments backlit with warm, red illumination. The instrument panel is a seamless design with low gloss and soft touch. Large, round knobs make operating the climate controls a breeze.

The ample center console accommodates large beverage cups – up to three in the front and two in the rear – while providing storage, a coin holder and armrest.

Copious Safety Feature
Grand Am takes safety seriously. A steel cage with reinforced pillars, side-guard door beams and a full-frame front chassis cradle provides outstanding occupant protection along with high-performance handling and a superior ride. Occupant protection is handled by standard features such as manual lap/shoulder safety belts for all outboard positions and lap belts for center seating positions. Frontal-impact air bags work in conjunction with safety belts to help protect the driver and right front passenger. The rear shoulder belts include child comfort guides, and anchors in all three rear-seating positions now attach to both the upper and lower tether straps provided on child safety seats.

Award-Winning Quality
Grand Am's customer-pleasing blend of practicality, convenience, performance and safety has not gone unnoticed. Grand Am recently received the prestigious Good Housekeeping Institute Women's Automotive Satisfaction Award, as well as Strategic Vision's 1999 Total Quality® Award for Best Compact Car Ownership Experience.

Grand Am is Pontiac's best-selling vehicle – and thanks to its 1999 comprehensive redesign, it has bolstered its leadership position in the compact class. Grand Am has consistently ranked as one of the top-ten selling automobiles as a result of its combination of bold athletic design, spirited driving performance, and all-around solid execution. From its confident stance to its aero-sleek roofline, Grand Am radiates well-built excitement.
